Germany and Finland – how Parliaments can be so different…

The German election is coming this September and 630 members of the German Parliament (Bundestag) are readying themselves fro the big day.

Germany has a population of 82 million people.

Finland has a population of 5.6 million and the number of MP’s sitting in our Parliament (Eduskunta) is 200.

If we regard Germany as being a democratic country that functions well, which is what most people agree with, then if we apply the same ratio of German MP’s in relation to the German population to the Finnish Parliament then there should be around 45 MP’s in Finland and not 200!

However we are a Nordic folk so we have approximately the right number in relation to Sweden, 25 too many in relation the Denmark and Norway!

On the other hand if we all dislike politicians so much, then would it not be fruitful to reduce their number now and save some cash!
