Postman’s Boss Wage is €82 000 a Month!

The Finnish Post Office (“Posti” in Finnish) is a nice company that handles glittering Christmas cards, happy birthday cards, sunny postcards from the Canaries, while also transporting interesting parcels and ugly invoices and other payment demands to your postbox, together with daily newspapers and magazines… they delivery every day except Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday.

This week your correspondent saw that 100 white sacks of cement had been delivered to a building site in Helsinki by the postman. There were four pallets of cement sacks covered in plastic with labels saying “25 x 30kg sacks of cement delivered to Bulevardi 9, Helsinki by Posti”!

I have never seen that before but any reader must understand that delivering such an assortment of letters, parcels and cargo is really a heavy and complex job. Complexity is just the right word because the cement was on the pavement outside Bulevardi number 5! They got that delivery wrong! The mathematics of complex delivery paths using AI and neural learning is all the rage in the Post Office, but it is difficult and even the best software programmers get it wrong occasionally. But never mind the Boss will soon sort all this out…

Given this complexity you can easily understand that the Boss should be receiving €83 000 a month while his busy workers need much less because all they have to do is read the label and make the delivery. That latter job is so easy that €2 000 a month is more than enough…

… no, says the Boss, that is 30% too much! He then waves his magic wand and decrees in Trump-like fashion that the workers really do need a 30% wage cut… so the new wage is now € 1 400, which is good because the Post now saves a lot of money to pay the owner a big dividend. The owner is the Republic of Finland and they are so happy that they are now considering giving the Boss a salary increase because his such a financial wizard.

… and the postmen get a new housing subsidy of €100 extra a month to help them pay the rent. Now everybody is happy.

The above is a true story – the Boss does receive that amount each month and postmen also were lucky to receive 30% less this week according to the papers. They said that they will be striking in protest, but the Boss will not be joining the strike because he will be busy sorting out all the problems…

By the way the Boss also helped out with another momentous decision to change the name to “Posti” from “Itella” a few years ago… now we know where the post office is…

Nice work if you can get it… and the income gap in Finland is really very narrow…

… and we hear that even bigger savings are being planned by the Post Office Boss. Customers are being asked to deliver there own letters for a small fee from now on so we will not need postmen any more…
